Poverty Transitions

Using Census data, we explore how individuals move into and out of poverty over time.

We follow individuals over three census years: 2006, 2011 and 2016. We explore the correlations amongst factors such as age, education, employment, and family dynamics and the entry into or exit from income poverty.

We divide the sample into two groups based on observed poverty status. In 2006, 14.5% of individuals were observed as living in poverty. By 2011, almost half of these individuals (48.9%) had exited poverty.

This tree includes men, women and migrant populations. But if you use the explore data tab, you can explore the tree and the changes over time for different groups.
