Experiencing poverty in childhood
Are socio-economic outcomes in adulthood dependent on the economic status of our parents?
The HILDA survey is a study of Australian households that has collected data on economic and personal wellbeing since 2001.
We use HILDA data to explore the impact of experiencing disadvantage in childhood on socio-economic outcomes in adulthood.
Our analysis studied 2000 children that we classify into the
following 4 groups
Never Poor: Never experienced poverty during childhood
Occasionally Poor: Experienced poverty for at least 1 year during childhood, but no more than 20% of years
Regularly Poor: Experienced poverty for more than 20% during childhood but no more than 50% of years
Frequently Poor: Experienced poverty for more than 50% of childhood
